Requiem448
Requiem448
A/V performance (13' 28'')
Premiered at Duomo Vecchio in Brescia, Requiem448 is a multimedia work of generative art and data sonification based on the Covid-19 data from Bergamo and Brescia, created by Nessun Dharma.
It is numerically generated using the Istat database, which contains information about the Covid-19 victims in the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia. Each second of the performance corresponded to a day, starting from January 1, 2020, and ending on March 18, 2022, with the intensity of the sound and visuals reflecting the intensity of the pandemic's waves. The number of sound and visual events per second equals the number of deaths that day. The dramatic development of the work follows moments of high intensity caused by the so-called "waves" and moments of relative calm.

Requiem448 was conceived as a temporal flow, where each second of the piece corresponds to a day in the period from January 1, 2020, to March 18, 2022. Every sound and image we perceived represented the number of deaths that occurred on those days. The succession of moments of intensity and calm built a dramatic narrative.
Live performance and audience engagement
The premiere of Requiem448 has left an indelible mark in our hearts and minds, showing how this work can transform numbers and statistics into an artistic language that has touched our souls.
The use of Duomo Vecchio’s ceiling as the projection surface created a profound connection between the audience and the artwork, with many viewers reporting a deep emotional response. Post-performance discussions and reflections, whether shared in person or online, confirmed that Requiem448 was deeply emotional, with many viewers reflecting on the personal and communal losses they had experienced during the pandemic. Requiem448 stood as a reminder of the pandemic’s toll, while also offering a space for collective mourning and contemplation and data embodiment.
The aesthetics of Requiem448 combine polyrhythms of idiophone timbres with data visualization.
The execution of Requiem448 required careful calibration of both audio and visual components to ensure that the data-driven narrative was conveyed effectively. The projection setup in the Duomo Vecchio was also a critical aspect, as the visuals had to align with the architectural features of the cathedral’s ceiling, creating an immersive environment for the audience. The audio was amplified using the spherical architectural condition of the Duomo. The two speakers, along with their subwoofers, were positioned at opposite ends of the circle, perfectly parallel to each other, aligned with the listeners' ears, ensuring that there were no phase issues.

How it is created
The audio component was generated by mapping the mortality data to sound parameters. The sound that echoes continuously throughout the performance, changing in meter subdivision, is a sample of a digitally generated bell. Around it, using the meter established by the data, other sounds are introduced to ensure a cohesive and comprehensible level of dramaturgy, as if it were a musical piece, making it more accessible even to less trained ears. The ratio used to achieve a temporal flow as close to reality as possible is 1 second to 1 day. Consequently, the number of victims was evenly distributed within the span of one second, creating sudden metric changes and moments of density where the sense of time was lost as the number of victims increased.
Requiem448 was possible thanks to Fabio Piovanelli of Rinascimento Culturale, Isaia Invernizzi who provides the data, Giulia Sandrini for the public relations and Daniele Faita and the Diocesi of Brescia who hosted the event.
